A Message From Your Tennis Pro |

THE ERA OF “WE”
Greetings Tennis Folk,
I was six years old when I took my first tennis lesson at Klahaya. It was a day that I will never forget, but it's the funniest thing because I don't remember even one bit of tennis. All that I remember from that frightening first day was the anxiety of being new and the warmth and kindness of a man with a teal hat, a big smile and a funny voice. With David Towne as pro, tennis lessons felt like a forty-five minute hug.
Flash forward almost twenty years of summers at Klahaya, countless lessons, tournaments, high school and collegiate tennis teams, two years of teaching 4th grade and now I have the opportunity to take over David's role as Head Tennis Pro at Klahaya. I've had my USPTA certification for two years, but it has never felt this real. This transition is an honor that I am humbled by and excited for. I would say I'm trying to fill David's shoes, but as every young tennis player at Klahaya knows, they housed a disgusting dead toenail. So I won't even try to fill them. How could I?
Klahaya Tennis is not about me. It's about we. It's about how we promote from within and develop our own coaches - this year I'll be joined again by Tristan Reni as Head Coach of the Tennis Team, Chase James as Assistant Coach, and Cara Williams and Ian Southcote-Want as Tennis Team Assistants. Klahaya Tennis is about how we have the biggest and most cohesive tennis team in Seattle. It's about how we choose to use tennis as a platform to become leaders, with events like the Ladder Cross and our Klahaya Cup League. We use Klahaya to become friends (ask anyone), and to become excellent players (each year we produce players capable of competing at a state level). It's about how we value winning, but how we also know that striving to improve and growing as people supersedes anything that could possibly show up in the score.
I can't fill David's shoes. But we can take what he has left us and run with it. I have never seen a tennis club with as much unity and pride as Klahaya. What we have is unique and we coaches are honored to take the reins as we enter the next era of Klahaya Tennis. May it remain the ERA of WE.
Can't wait to see you on the courts,
Peter Reni
